In the preface the editors explain that this book contains “descriptions of major systems and models that were specifically developed to guide programs for the gifted and talented” (p. iv). In this second edition they have decided to include both theoretical models mainly influential in determining the quality of special program experiences; and administrative models concerned with efficiency of operation and fitness with total school program. Materials were collected according to three major criteria: (a) models that are theoretically sound and may also be implemented in a wide variety of school settings; (b) integrity and internal consistency; and (c) longevity and extent of implementation.
