Summary and Outlook: An important question in interfer-ometry that of scaling for precision with photon number Nand whether this scaling changes as Nincreases. We havequantified by the QFI, is quadratic in Ninitially and under-goes the crossover into the regime where it scales linearly withN. This has far-reaching repercussions — the crossover loca-tion N c is a function only of dissipation, due to these losses aresource bound (or scale) is imposed on any instrument claim-ing to offer supra-classical precision. Our results showing thatthe improvement of the phase precision per photon is dissipa-tion limited put into question the existing strategy of improv-ing the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors by increas-ing signal flux N.We have characterized the structure of the optimal state forsingle mode losses, showing that it undergoes an intriguingsequence of bifurcations as losses increase. We have shownthat in the high loss limit the optimal state has a width thatscales as N 2=3 or N
