This chapter presents a list of built-in Mathematica objects starting with the alphabet I. It also discusses these and illustrates their uses. I represents the imaginary number i = . Numbers that contain this unit are classified as Complex. Identity [expression] represents the identity operation, and, hence, yields expression. IdentityMatrix [n] yields the n × n identity matrix. IgnoreCase is an option used with functions, such as StringPosition, StringReplace, Find, and FindList to indicate whether or not upper- and lower-case letters are to be treated equivalently. Indent [d] is used to alter the appearance of output by indenting for a depth d subexpression. The default for this command is d. Indeterminate is the output for computations that yield an indeterminate numerical result such as 0/0 or 1/0. Input [ ] is used in order to have Mathematica ask for input from the user. The manner in which this command functions depends on the particular computer system being used. The command Input [“prompt”] first displays a prompt and then reads in the input offered by the user.
