This paper discusses the link between RD this general result is largely consistent with previous literature in terms of the sign, the significance and the magnitude of the estimated coefficients. More interestingly, both at sectoral and firm levels the RD technological change embodied in gross investment is of comparable importance on aggregate and is the main determinant of productivity increase in the low-tech sectors. Hence, an economic policy aiming to increase productivity in the low-tech sectors should support overall capital formation. JEL-classification: O33

- R&D, productivity, and market value: An empirical study from high-technology firms (2013, background): “Prior research has argued that the nature of R&D activities plays a critical role in determining the productivity levels of high-technology firms [58,59] and stimulates the firms’ growth [60].”
- Measuring the Returns to R&D (2010, background): “…for the scientific (R&D-intensive) firms, at least in the cross section dimension (see Griliches 1980, Griliches and Mairesse 1984, Cunéo and Mairesse 1984, Mairesse and Cunéo 1985, Sassenou 1988, Odagiri 1983, Englander et al. 1988, Bartelsman 1990b, Hall 1993 and Ortega-Argilés et al. 2009).”
- R&D and Non-linear Productivity Growth (2016, methodology): “Employing the same Scoreboard data as in the present study, Ortega-Argiles et al. (2010) examined top R&D investors in EU and concluded that the positive impact of R&D on firm productivity increases from low-tech through medium-high to high-tech sectors.”
- Smart Specialization, Regional Growth and Applications to European Union Cohesion Policy (2015, background): “This is a wideranging literature that attempts to identify the key factors which underpinned the increasing productivity gap (ORTEGA-ARGILÉS et al., 2010, 2011).”
- The Job Creation Effect of R&D Expenditures (2012, unknown): “…the impact of innovation and R&D on productivity is unequivocally positive (for surveys of the empirical evidence on this subject, see Mairesse and Sassenou, 1991; Ortega-Argilés et al., 2010), the assessment of the possible effects of technological change on employment is much more controversial.”
