We show how to map local fermionic problems onto local spin problems on a lattice in any dimension. The main idea is to introduce auxiliary degrees of freedom, represented by Majorana fermions, which allow us to extend the Jordan–Wigner transformation to dimensions higher than one. We also discuss the implications of our results in the numerical investigation of fermionic systems.

- Quantum optimization using variational algorithms on near-term quantum devices (2017, methodology): “ that is shorter than the coherence time of the quantum computer. The same variational quantum eigensolver can be applied to other physical systems in condensed matter such as the Fermi-Hubbard model [2,45,12,17,46,47,48] and spin systems [49,50,51,52]. Hybrid algorithms are, however, not resilient ”
