Plasma melatonin synthesis in juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar decreased with increasing light intensity. Melatonin profiles reflected accurately the photoperiod under which the salmon were maintained. Groups maintained at 12° C showed significantly higher (P<0.01) levels of dark phase plasma melatonin compared with the groups maintained at 4° C.

- Photoperiod can be used to enhance growth and improve feeding efficiency in farmed rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (2006, background): “Furthermore, the response of plasma melatonin to changes in light is affected by both light intensity and water temperature (Porter et al., 2001).”
- Light Pollution, Circadian Photoreception, and Melatonin in Vertebrates (2019, background): “Furthermore, while an adaptation of endogenous melatonin rhythms to the permanent illumination cannot be excluded, it is considered unlikely, given that other studies reviewed here had a similar experimental duration [59,61].”
