Trio for Violin, Viola and Violoncello. By Robert Muczynski. Edition Theodore Presser Company, 1983. $25.00. Commissioned in 1971 by the First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati, Ohio, Trio Op. 31 by Robert Muczynski is a four-movement work solid in form, using consistent chromatic linear lines and varied, vigorous rhythmic figures, with excellent balance in instrumental interchange. Muczynski, who studied with Alexander Tcherepnin at DePaul University, appears to be using a variant of his teacher's nine-tone and added-tone scale procedures for his own chromatic technique. Insistent motivic melodies contrast with lyrical lines. Adroitly rounded forms and subtle instrumental colors add to a sense of refinement. This exciting, accessible work is suitable for collegiate and/or professional groups looking for music in a mild contemporary style. [T.T.] II Minuetto for strings. By Giacomo Puccini. Boccaccini and Spada Etitori, Rome, 1982. Score and set of parts $14.25. This string quartet is the second of three minuets from a young Puccini. Spada's edition is from an autograph manuscript at the Boccherini Institute in Lucca. The short typical minuet form in A majorlD major harmony provides interesting style work for all parts. Yet the left hand technique required is reasonably attainable by student players. The editor offers no markings for fingerings or bowing, but dynamics and tempo markings are carefully indicated. The first violin ventures into fifth position while others could be handled entirely in the first position. Surprisingly, the viola line is both interesting and challenging. Despite the lack of a bass part, this quartet would fare well in the repertoire of the string orchestra, and could be performed by students as well as professionals. [G.R.D.]
