Abstract Effective thermal management is essential for lithium-ion batteries to reduce the battery surface temperatures and the temperature differences within the battery packs. In this study, a battery thermal management (BTM) system containing flat heat pipes was established to improve the temperature uniformity during high discharge rate operations, thereby ensuring battery performances, long lifetimes, and safety. A numerical model was developed, and the modeling results agreed with the experimental data. Through the simulation analysis, we discuss the change in the battery temperature fields, which were compared to two other cooling systems: air natural convection and aluminum plate cooling. The results indicated that the use of flat heat pipes could effectively decrease the maximum temperature and temperature difference with minimum energy costs.
