With the emergence of ants as standard indicator species, for applications ranging from monitoring the recovery of impacted ecosystems to their use as community surrogates for a variety of natural habitats, there was always a gap for a book synthesizing the vast literature on ant ecology. Their abundance, diversity, relative ease of identification (to genus or species group at least), well-worked taxonomy, trophic importance and mutualisms with other insects add to their importance in ecological studies.
