The recently discovered FeAs-based materials exhibit a $(\ensuremath{\pi},0)$ spin density wave (SDW) in the undoped state, which gives way to superconductivity upon doping. Here we show that due to an interesting topological feature of the band structure, the SDW state cannot acquire a full gap. This is demonstrated within the SDW mean-field theory of both a simplified two-band model and a more realistic five-band model. The positions of the nodes are different in the two models and can be used to detect the validity of each model.

- Symmetry-breaking orbital anisotropy observed for detwinned Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 above the spin density wave transition (2010, background): “We note that such band crossings were discussed in early five-band model calculations where they were linked to Dirac cone features (33, 34).”
- In-plane electronic anisotropy of underdoped ‘122’ Fe-arsenide superconductors revealed by measurements of detwinned single crystals (2011, background): “In stark contrast, measurements of detwinned single crystals of the hole-doped system Ba1−xKxFe2As2 (figure 14, Ying et al 2011) indicate a vanishingly small in-plane anisotropy for x = 0.1 and 0.18.”
