We present a new class of boron sheets, composed of triangular and hexagonal motifs, that are more stable than structures considered to date and thus are likely to be the precursors of boron nanotubes. We describe a simple and clear picture of electronic bonding in boron sheets and highlight the importance of three-center bonding and its competition with two-center bonding, which can also explain the stability of recently discovered boron fullerenes. Our findings call for reconsideration of the literature on boron sheets, nanotubes, and clusters.

- Direct evidence of metallic bands in a monolayer boron sheet (2015, background): “ As boron has one less electron than carbon, the most stable monolayer boron structures are triangular lattices with ordered patterns of hexagon holes to balance the two-center and multi-center bonds [22, 23, 24, 25, 26]. To date, various types of monolayer boron with different configurations of hex”
- Two-dimensional boron monolayer sheets. (2012, background): “The first (and original) β-sheet was reported by Tang and IsmailBeigi.(33,34) Later, Boustani and co-workers(36) reported a more stable β-type sheet, previously named as the γ-sheet (or β10-sheet in this study; see Table 1b).”
