Abstract The suitability of bronopol as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminium metal in acidic hydrochloric solutions has been investigated through weight loss (WL) method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis and computational approaches. The weight loss data combined with the electrochemical measurement were used to evaluate the degree of protection and inhibition mechanism of the inhibitor. It was found that bronopol exhibits a maximum of 93.89% inhibition efficiency at 4000 ppm concentration against the aluminium corrosion in 0.5 M HCl acidic media. The adsorption of inhibitor on aluminium surface tends to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed bronopol to be a mixed sort of inhibitor. Experimental and theoretical outcomes were in perfect agreement with each other suggesting bronopol to be an environmental friendly corrosion inhibitor.
