Abstract In this study the uncertainties about the stability threshold of rotating systems supported by cylindrical journal bearings are addressed, which are subjected to fluid-induced instability. The parameters considered to present variabilities were the bearing clearance, which is affected by wear, and the oil temperature, which may vary because of operation or even weather conditions. Since the stability threshold is expected to change in rotating systems with high shaft eccentricity in lubricated bearings, the chosen system configurations were tested with or without additional static load. According to the results, for systems with higher eccentricity, threshold variability is significant and may not be safe to operate at the deterministic threshold. In order to understand the degree to which the variabilities of the parameters affect the system response, a factorial design with two levels of coefficient of variation was produced for the chosen loaded system. It was verified that the bearing clearance variance has more effect on the stability threshold variance, which indicates that it may be important to properly consider this parameter variability to assure a safe operation.
