The use of photocatalyst for the degradation of synthetic and organic pollutants such as dyes and chemicals has emerged as an effective method for the waste water treatment. In this review, we have focused on the photocatalytic materials that are based on two dimensional carbonous nanostructures like graphene oxide (GO) or reduced graphene oxide (RGO) which possesses high oxygen functionalities, large surface area and effective adsorption sites. The composites of GO/RGO surpasses electron-holes pairs recombination rate and reduces energy gap by modifying valence band level (VBL) and conduction band level (CBL) resulting in better adsorption of light radiation that enhances photodegradation performance of metal oxides and polymers-based composites. This review will be the first attempt to comprehensively explore the effect of photocatalytic activities on loading of GO/RGO with metals oxides and polymer-based composites. Moreover, the effect of pH, initial dye concentration, dose of photocatalyst and effect of surface charge on composite surface for effective degradation have also been examined.
