The aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to the field of thermal barrier coatings, which play an important role in aeronautics, aerospace and power generation plants, due to a combination of properties that these materials exhibit, such as low thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion coefficient. To approach this subject, the following topics will be introduced: some history explaining the emergence of this kind of coatings, then, the components of a thermal barrier system are described showing their advantages, and finally, materials that are commonly used to be deposited as a thermal barrier coating are described
