In this section, we explain the motivation behind selecting the finiteelement method as a spatial discretization. We then show how the mathematical details of the method can be abstracted and implemented efficiently on a computer. Finally, we show how the details of a particular wave equation can themselves be generalized, leading to efficient implementations of coupled domains and viscoelasticity.
