Abstract We investigate the effect of annealing on the properties of Fe-6.9wt% Si produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM), a powder-bed additive manufacturing technology. Results show that annealing at 1150 °C for 1 h produces a recrystallized microstructure characterised by predominantly equi-axed grains with sizes of up to 300 μm. Importantly, annealing retains the SLM-induced crystallographic 〈001〉 texture along the build direction of the sample. The quasi-static magnetic properties achieved upon annealing, with maximum relative permeability of 24,000 and coercivity of 16 A/m, compare favourably with those reported for commercial high-Si steel laminations.
