This is a review of aspects of D‐brane applications to particle physics and cosmology. D‐branes provide interesting alternatives to standard unification of interactions. Moreover they entail new mechanisms in cosmology that have the potential to explain recent observational data.

- Four-dimensional string compactifications with D-branes, orientifolds and fluxes (2006, unknown): “We are trying to be comprehensive and pedagogic in the exposition of the topic, which makes some overlap with existing reviews unavoidable, notably with review articles on D-branes [2, 3], on orientifolds [65, 20], on D-brane model building [66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 51] (see also the PhD theses [71, 72, ”
- Loop-corrected compactifications of the heterotic string with line bundles (2005, background): “For Type I like constructions much effort has gone into the study of so-called intersecting D-brane models, where Standard Model like features could be engineered geometrically (see [1–5] for reviews).”
- Orientifolds, hypercharge embeddings and the Standard Model (2006, background): “Therefore, there are always gauge instantons and their string theory generalization, that violate the global symmetry non-perturbatively (see [46]).”
