We describe a method which allows one to study hidden symmetries in a large class of strongly coupled supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions. We apply this method to the ABJM theory and to the infrared limit of $ \mathcal{N} = 4 $ SQCD with adjoint and fundamental matter. We show that the U(N) ABJM model with Chern-Simons level k = 1or k = 2 has hidden $ \mathcal{N} = 8 $ supersymmetry. Hidden supersymmetry is also shown to occur in $ \mathcal{N} = 4 $d = 3 SQCD with one fundamental and one adjoint hypermultiplet. The latter theory, as well as the U(N) ABJM theory at k = 1, are shown to have a decoupled free sector. This provides evidence that both models are dual to the infrared limit of $ \mathcal{N} = 8 $ U(N) super-Yang-Mills theory.

- Exact results on the ABJM Fermi gas (2012, unknown): “It was then proposed that assuming the existence of the monopole operator we can construct the N = 8 supersymmetry algebra when k = 1, 2 [4, 5, 6, 7].”
- (1,0) superconformal models in six dimensions (2011, methodology): “The N = 6 ABJM model has the same field content as the N = 8 multiplet and it has been argued that monopole operators enhance the supersymmetry to N = 8 for k = 1, 2 [6, 7] (for U(2) gauge group see [8, 9]).”
- Black hole microstates in AdS4 from supersymmetric localization (2015, background): “Working in components, though, one finds the full SO(6)R symmetry; for k = 1, 2 the R-symmetry is further enhanced to SO(8) quantum mechanically [15, 27, 28].”
- Towards the F-theorem: $ \mathcal{N} = 2 $ field theories on the three-sphere (2011, background): “Indeed, it was argued in [43] that there is a supersymmetry enhancement to maximal N = 8 supersymmetry when n1 = 1.”
