Recreational fishing involves millions of people globally, generating billions of U.S. dollars in a range of sectors (Arlinghaus et al., 2019; FAO, 2012). In freshwater fisheries in industrialized countries, recreational fishing is today the dominant form of exploitation of wildliving fish resources (Arlinghaus et al., 2002; FAO, 2012), and its importance is rising rapidly in coastal and marine fisheries traditionally dominated by commercial fisheries (Hyder et al., 2018; Ihde et al., 2011).
