Vehicle-grid integration (VGI) describes various approaches to link the electric power system and the transportation system in ways that may benefit both. VGI includes systems that treat plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) as controllable load with a unidirectional flow of electricity, such as “smart” or “controlled” charging or time-of-use (TOU) pricing. VGI typically encompasses vehicle-to-grid (V2G), a more technically advanced vision with bidirectional flow of electricity between the vehicle and power grid, in effect treating the PEV as a storage device. Such VGI systems could help decarbonize transportation, support load balancing, integrate renewable energy into the grid, increase revenues for electricity companies, and create new revenue streams for automobile owners. This review introduces various aspects and visions of VGI based on a comprehensive review. In doing so, it identifies the possible benefits, opportunities, and barriers relating to V2G, according to technical, financial, socio-environmen...

- A review of consumer preferences of and interactions with electric vehicle charging infrastructure (2018, unknown): “This review does not consider the impact of V2G (bi-directional smart charging), this is due to literature in that area currently lacking empirical data on how consumers respond to this technology, how they use it, or whether they would use it (Sovacool et al., 2017).”
- Pleasure or profit? Surveying the purchasing intentions of potential electric vehicle adopters in China (2019, background): “(Sovacool et al. 2017) Uncoordinated policy mixes and transformative failures, consumer misperceptions (Zarazua et al.”
- The rise of electric vehicles—2020 status and future expectations (2021, unknown): “With regard to the technical challenges of VGI, existing barriers notably include battery degradation, charger availability and efficiency, communication standards, cybersecurity, and aggregation issues (Eiza and Ni 2017, Sovacool et al 2017, Noel et al 2019a).”
- Factors influencing consumer acceptance of vehicle-to-grid by electric vehicle drivers in the Netherlands (2021, background): “…focused on, such as those conducted by Geske and Schumann (2018) and Noel et al. (2019a), these issues are notably absent, though they are frequently mentioned in interviews with experts (Noel et al., 2019b; Kester et al., 2018) and academic reviews (Sovacool et al., 2017; Sovacool et al., 2018).”
