X-rays are hazardous and the utmost care must be exercised when using the apparatus. You must receive safety training before you begin the experiment. NEVER EXPOSE ANY PART OF THE BODY TO THE DIRECT X-RAY BEAM. Always make sure that the shielding is in place before turning on the high voltage. Consult your instructor for the shielding requirements. Use the portable Geiger counter to measure background levels with the beam off. Then verify that all potential radiation leaks which could exist while the beam is on have been eliminated.
