Model Fe–20Cr (wt.%) alloy, exposed to Ar–20CO 2 at 650 °C, formed a protective Cr 2 O 3 scale, but nonetheless carburized. Atom probe analysis shows that carbon penetrates the scale via oxide grain boundaries.
