Abstract The light fragment production reactions for 10 MeV to 3 GeV protons incident on 16 O , 27 Al , nat Fe , 93 Nb and nat Ag are analyzed by a combination of an intranuclear cascade model and a generalized evaporation model which includes light nuclei up to Mg as ejectiles. The results suggested that an evaporation process is a significant source of light fragment lighter than or equal to Be produced from targets heavier than O.

- Benchmark study of the recent version of the PHITS code (2017, methodology): “6 with the evaporation model GEM can generally reproduce neutron and charged particle yields produced by proton and heavy-ion beams with energies above 100 MeV/u, except for the p-Li reaction.”
- Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System, PHITS, version 2.52 (2013, methodology): “The de-excitation of the created pre-fragments down to their ground states is then simulated using the GEM model.”
- Features of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) version 3.02 (2018, methodology): “In addition, the competition between neutrons and γ -ray emissions can be considered in the improvedGEM,whereas in the former version, it was presumed that an excited nucleus can emit γ -rays only when neutron emission is prohibited.”
