Abstract It is of key importance to remove the excessive phosphate in a water body to prevent the occurrence of eutrophication. Lanthanum (La)-based materials have shown great potential for phosphate removal due to the strong affinity between La and phosphate. In this study, we report the first example of loading La in magnetic ordered mesoporous silica nanoparticles for the removal of phosphate in water. Our optimum sample Mag-MSNs-42%La exhibited a fast adsorption kinetics and a high Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of 54.2 mg P/g. Remarkably, this sample demonstrated ultrahigh stability within the pH range 4.0–11.0, broader than many other La-based adsorbents reported previously. Our sample also showed high adsorption selectivity to phosphate in the presence of competing anions and humic acid, and efficient P removal from real contaminated water. With more merits of easy separation though magnetic force and easy reproduction, our sample could be an ideal candidate as an effective phosphate adsorbent.
