We present a model that enables simulations of concurrent coupled lithium dendrite growth, SEI formation and growth on the dendrite surface, dendrite penetration of the SEI layer, and SEI regrowth. The concept of SEI coverage density is introduced, which is conceptuallysimilartoSEIthicknessbutbroader.SEIanddendritegrowthinteractswitheachotherbyevolvingdendritemorphology,stretchingofSEIbythedendritesurface,andtheeffectofevolvingSEIthickness(coveragedensity)onlithiumdepositionreaction.Themodelshowsthatevenunderlowcurrentdensity,smallprotrusionsonlithiumsurfacecanstillgrowintodendritesbypenetratingSEIandcausinginhomogeneouselectricalresistanceondendritesurface.Wefindthatdendritegrowthshowstwodistinctstages:fastaccelerationduringSEIpenetration,andstablegrowthafterreachinganequilibriumSEIthicknessatthedendritetip.Underlowcurrentdensity,increasingcurrentscalesupthegrowthrateofdendritewithoutmuchshapechange.Highcurrentdensitycausesdendritemorphologytochangesignificantly,forminganeedleshape.WeshowthatlocalSEIdefects/inhomogeneitycaninducedendriteformationandgrowth.Ourstudysuggeststhatflatlithiumsurface,uniformSEIlayer,andlowSEIresistivityareimportanttoreducedendriteformation.©TheAuthor(s)2017.PublishedbyECS.ThisisanopenaccessarticledistributedunderthetermsoftheCreativeCommonsAttribution4.0License(CCBY,http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/),whichpermitsunrestrictedreuseoftheworkinanymedium,providedtheoriginalworkisproperlycited.[DOI:10.1149/2.0381709jes]Allrightsreserved.
