Abstract Along with the rapid development of electric vehicles in many countries, the associated potential carbon mitigation effects have attracted global attention. Therefore, this study investigates the dynamic linkages between the stock of electric vehicles and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in eight leading countries (i.e., China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK) by employing monthly data during the period 2009-2017. To systematically analyze how the quantiles of electric vehicles affect the quantiles of CO2 emissions, this study employs the quantile-on-quantile (QQ) regression approach. The empirical results confirm the existence of heterogeneity among the eight leading countries in the nexus between electric vehicles and CO2 emissions. This study also employs a panel model technique to develop a conceptual framework to identify the impacts of long-term socioeconomic development and the environmental effects of electric vehicles on CO2 emissions. Overall, electric vehicles have a negative effect on CO2 emissions, while CO2 emissions weakly and positively affect electric vehicles. Moreover, the eight leading countries provide mixed directionality of causality between electric vehicles and CO2 emissions. Finally, several policy implications are highlighted for mitigating CO2 emissions and promoting growth in the electric vehicle industry in the eight leading countries.
