Abstract A novel bio-based elastic polyurethane coated urea fertilizer (ECU) was successfully developed using low-cost, biodegradable, and renewable waste palm oil. The process utilized acrylonitrile modification to grant the ECU with excellent swollen capacity. The modified green bio-based polyurethane (PU) coating efficiently delayed the nutrient release. Herein coating shell's swollen capacity and nutrient controlled-release behaviors of the normal bio-based PU-coated urea fertilizer (PCU) and ECU in water were investigated. The results showed acrylonitrile modified bio-based polyurethane successfully transformed it into coated controlled-release urea fertilizer with excellent agricultural properties. Nutrient released longevity of ECU reached more than 80 days while that of PCU was only about 50 days. The novel synthesis and innovative application of bio-based elastic material in this study will provide not only theoretical bases but also practical guidelines for research and development of high-efficiency and environmentally friendly controlled-release fertilizer.
